New Home, Mid-Century Look - $1.649 Million

This listing is for a newly built home with a mid-century contemporary look. From the outside, the 4/3.5 home located in Glen Echo Heights in Bethesda reminds me of a Charles Goodman design.

Breuer, Saarinen and More at the National Building Musuem

The National Building Museum will be holding major retrospectives on two of the most influential modern designers and architects of the 20th century: Marcel Breuer and Eero Saarinen. The exhibit on Breuer starts Nov. 3, while the show on Saarinen begins May 3, 2008. The museum will also hold a major exhibit examining the World's Fairs of the 1930s. The effort, which is scheduled for the summer of 2009, will "convey how six distinct fairs were constructed to represent ideas about the future through a shared modernist aesthetic." I'm glad I work only a few blocks away.

Hollin Hills Featured in Examiner

Today's Examiner real estate section has a feature on Hollin Hills. Entitled "Not your father's Virginia," the piece does a good job describing the community by Charles Goodman and Robert Davenport. Author Katie Wilmeth curiously does not even mention the term mid-century modern and says the community is "so unique" that the homeowners are working to have the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No mention in the story that Goodman's Rock Creek Woods, Hammond Woods in Silver Spring and five homes in Takoma Park are already listed on the NRHP.

New Goodman listing in Hollin Hills - $629K

Here's a new listing (with pictures) for a 1952 expanded 4/2 Charles Goodman in Hollin Hills. Looks like the kitchen could use some work. It does have a greenhouse and a separate workshop on the the nicely landscaped .4 acre lot.

1960 Cathedral Heights Condo – 449K

I like the wood floors, expansive built-in Danish modern wall units and original 1960s bathrooms in this 1,500 sq. ft. condo in Cathedral Heights in D.C. The listing has more good images.

One-Bedroom in Goodman's River Park - $179K

Here's listing for a 1/1 in a River Park co-op high-rise. River Park in southwest D.C. was designed by Charles Goodman. As part of southwest Washington's urban renewal efforts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Goodman's firm designed River Park, which was built by the Reynolds Aluminum Corporation to highlight the usefulness of aluminum. River Park includes townhomes (you can see above) and high-rise buildings. Unfortunately, no pictures on this one.

1954 Custom Mid-Century Ranch in Annandale - $655K

I like the architectural detail of the square cut outs along the front wall of this house, which is located on three quarters of an acre in Brook Hill Estates in Annandale.

Endangered: 1958 Rambler in Bradley Hills Grove - $1.6 Million

This mid-century rambler, which sits on 1.2 acres in Bethesda, looks like it will be torn down to make way for a McMansion.

Back on the Market: 1965 California Contemporary in Crestwood - $975K

This California contemporary in Crestwood in D.C. is back on the market. It was listed for almost $1.1 million back in February. Crestwood is located between 16th Street and Rock Creek Park, has a good variety of mid-century modern homes as well as other styles. This home is a 4/2.5 and has been extensively renovated inside. The listing has a lot of images in the virtual tour.

This house, which was featured in a March 1964 article in Architectural Record, was open today for the first time only to agents who can bring clients this week by appointment. The house will be open to all from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday. The Friedman House is a 4/3.5 on nearly an acre in Bethesda (not sure why the article says Silver Spring.) Here are more images.

1960 Untouched Bannockburn Contemporary - $700K

This listing is for what looks like a pretty much untouched four level, 5/3 contemporary in Bannockburn in Bethesda. The agent is using this line: "Use your magic and create the home of your dreams!" The price reflects this view. Hopefully, someone's dream will be to stay true to the existing features of the house.

1960 Goodman in Rock Creek Woods - $635K

Here's a new listing for a 5/3 Charles Goodman in Rock Creek Woods in Silver Spring. Not sure about that kitchen. Goodman might be spinning around in his grave. For some more info on Goodman and Rock Creek Woods, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, scroll down to page thee of this issue of the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission's newsletter, the Preservationist.

1965 Ken Freeman in Mantua - $629K; Open 10/14

This new listing for a 3/2.5 Ken Freeman contemporary in Mantua was submitted by Modern Capital reader Dennis. The Fairfax home, which is close to 3,000 sq. ft. and sits on a half acre lot, is open this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. See the listing for more images.

1958 Kenwood Park Rambler Project - $829K

While the listing says the house needs considerable work and does not include any interior pictures, I'm highlighting this 4/2.5 rambler because I really like Kenwood Park in Bethesda. The neighborhood has a nice variety of contemporary homes from the 1950s and '60s. Could be a good sweat equity project in a neighborhood with $1 million+ homes. Hopefully someone can restore this, rather than destroy the contemporary feel as the owners did in this 1957 split-level in the neighborhood.

1962 California Contemporary in Charred Oak Estates - 875K

This listing is for a 5/3 California contemporary located in Charred Oak Estates in Bethesda. I like the view from the back of the house where you can see the abundance of glass. Charred Oak Estates is filled mostly with 1960s California-style contemporaries.
