A newly listed 4/2 Charles Goodman townhome in River Park in Southwest D.C. As part of Southwest's urban renewal efforts, Goodman was picked to design River Park's apartment building complex and townhomes by Reynolds Metal. River Park was designed to display the company's aluminum building products.
Here's a good Flickr slideshow with some images of River Park and other mid-century modern architecture here in D.C.

Price Drop: New Home, Mid-Century Look - $1.584 Million; Open 3/30
The price on this new home with a mid-century contemporary look has dropped $55,000 since it originally went on the market in October. From the outside, the 4/3.5 home located in Glen Echo Heights in Bethesda reminds me of a Charles Goodman design. It's open March 30 from 2 to 5 p.m.

1969 Gardenview in Truro - $599K
This Gardenview model, known for its courtyard entry, also has plenty of glass and an extensive Oriental garden out back. The listing for the 4/3 Truro contemporary has additional pictures under the FeaturedTour button. There are only 11 Gardenview models out of the 156 homes in the Annandale community. Truro was designed by architects Deigert & Yerkes and built by developers Miller & Smith in the late 1960s. Miller and Smith also built the contemporary communities of Wessynton, Drumaldry and Oak Springs (Manor Woods) in Rockville.

Three Mid-Century Splits in Kemp Mill Estates
I came across three modest, mid-century split-levels in Kemp Mill Estates in Silver Spring. All three feature ample windows on the front of the house. The "front" door, surrounded by glass, is located on the side of the home, accessible via the car port. Each feature cool slanted roof lines.
Two are located on Bluff Terrace, which back ups to Northwest Branch Park.
103 Bluff Terrace - 1960 4/2.5 - 435K
104 Bluff Terrace - 1960 6/3 - 495K
The third home is located here.
1958 4/2.5 - 445K

Wright Road Trip
The Post ran a piece the other day on three Frank Lloyd Wright homes in Pennsylvania a short drive from D.C., including Fallingwater. You can even stay overnight at the Duncan House or have your wedding at Kentuck Knob.
Chloethiel Smith's Coleson Cluster in Reston
I added a new link to the MCM Neighborhoods list. Designed by Reston founder Robert E. Simon and modernist architect Chloethiel Woodard Smith in the mid-1960s, Coleson Cluster consists of 47 two-, three- and four-bedroom flat-roofed, brick rowhouses with floor-to-ceiling windows on each level. Here's a vintage image of a real estate agent showing a couple the homes in June 1966. I did not see any homes currently on the market in the neighborhood, which is located here.
Smith's most recognized design in Reston is the Waterview Cluster of townhomes overlooking Lake Anne. Here's a vintage brochure marketing the townhomes, built between 1962 and 1965.

1965 MCM Ranch in Mantua - $699K
This listing is for a ranch on nearly one acre here in Mantua. I like the sidelights around the front door. I also like the front facade of the great room, with its wall of glass surrounded by stone. The pitched gable is reminicient of the homes of Joseph Eichler in California.
Endangerd: 1967 Redwood MCM in McLean - $935K
Looks like another endangered home on a large lot in McLean. This redwood-clad MCM on nearly an acre located here is being marketed for the "ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ACRE OF PARADISE!" This one appears to be under contract.

1957 Moyaone Reserve MCM on 5 Acres - $400K
Here's a listing for an untocuhed MCM located in Moyaone Reserve. The design of the 3/1.5 home is attributed to Dallas modernist architect Lyle Rowley.
1960 I.M. Pei Slayton House in Cleveland Park - $4.25 Million
The I.M. Pei Slayton House I mentioned in this post nearly a year ago is on the market. Pei designed the Cleveland Park home, with its unique three poured concrete vaults, for William Slayton, a friend and colleague at the the Urban Renewal Administration Commissioner. Hugh Newell Jacobsen designed plans for the renovation done by the owner who bought the 2/3 house from the Slayton family after William Slayton and his wife passed away after living in the house for 40 years. Read a great article (starting on page 7 of the magazine) on the house by Hannah McCann in the summer 2003 issue of ArchitectureDC. The spread includes good images as well as photos detailing the house's construction and "vignettes" from Slayton about the house, which were recorded in 1990s. The house is located here on Ordway Street. Make sure click on the virtual tour for good images.

1951 Chevy Chase Ranch - $949K
Here's one for the ranch fans out there. This listing is for a 1951 one-level in Chevy Chase located on East-West Highway just east of Connecticut Avenue. Unfortunately, the listing only has a few pictures, so it is hard to get a total picture of the house.
Check out this short video from HGTV's Front Door Real Estate web site discussing the origins of the modest, mid-century ranch and the renewed interest in the design by those like us seeking that retro feel.

Two 1960s Contemporaries in Rockville's Manor Woods; Open 3/16
Compared to most homes I post on the blog, here are two more moderately priced contemporaries in Manor Woods in Rockville. Both are open March 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.
1965 4/3 - $511K - Typical unfortunate kitchen/bath updates in this one. Overall, it looks like it could be a cool space. Located here.
1966 4/3 - $469K - Looks like the kitchen could be original. Nice patio and deck. The owners even have MCM furniture so you can really picture how your stuff would look. Located here.
1951 Goodman in Hammond Wood - $569K; Open 3/16

1950 Hollin Hills Goodman - $499K; Open 3/16
If you're thinking about buying a Goodman, now looks like a good time to be looking. There are plenty homes for sale throughout his communities in Virginia, D.C. and Maryland. This listing is for another one in Hollin Hills. This is the lowest priced home in Hollin Hills I have seen during the past couple years. The agent is marketing the 4/2 home as an "amazing opportunity to restore and customize a Goodman-designed mid-century modern rambler, nestled in a serene one-half acre wooded lot." Looks like it could use some work, but it could be a good choice for those who can't or do not want to spend the more typical $600K to $800K for a house in the community. Its open this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Two Pine Spring Contemporaries
1952 4/2.5 - 629K - From the pictures, this looks one of the nicest homes I seen in the Falls Church neighborhood. Great wood ceilings, tons of glass and cool brick fireplace in the middle of the living room. The house is located here.
1952 3/2 - $549K - I like all the windows on the front of this one located here, just around the corner from the one above.

1953 Hollin Hills Goodman - $569K
Here's another Goodman. This 3/1 is on Paul Spring Road in Hollin Hills. Click on the listing's virtual tour button for images.

Endangered: 1957 Custom Goodman in McLean - $1.6 Million
A small modern home located on 1.69 acres in Ballantrae Farms, an exclusive neighborhood in McLean. Doesn't look good. This custom Charles Goodman box-like home raised by pilotis evokes Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, built near Paris in 1930. In the listing, the agent suggests that the property presents a "rare opportunity to build your dream home" and shows only exterior images of the house and surrounding land. However, the listing does mention Goodman and makes clear that another option is to add to the home, which won an award in 1957 from the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Hope this one does not disappear.
1951 Goodman in Wheatoncrest - $385K
Here's a 2/1 Charles Goodman located in Wheatoncrest, where 27 Goodman homes were built. The listing says it has been "tastefully restored," but shows no interior pictures. Not a good sign.

1951 Goodman in Hammond Wood - $529K
This is the way to market a FSBO. The couple looking to sell this 1951 Charles Goodman in Hammond Wood have created an extensive web site to feature their 4/2 home in the Wheaton/Silver Spring-area neighborhood. Hammond Wood is in the National Register of Historic Places. I've seen this marketing strategy done with MCM homes in other cities, but it is the first time I have seen it here in D.C.

1968 McLean Contemporary on 1 Acre - $1.299 Million; open 3/9
Check out the redwood ceilings in this sprawling contemporary located on one acre in the Saigon neighborhood of McLean. I'm less into the kitchen redo and bathrooms, but what else is new. The 4/3 home is open March 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.

1965 Contemporary in Lake Normandy Estates - $799K
I like the open spaces and all the glass around the entryway in this 1965 split-foyer contemporary. The 4/3 home is located in Lake Normandy Estates in Potomac. The listing has plenty of images.
